In Liz Drogin’s Writing 20 course, "Writing with Durham," Duke students read, write, and talk about social issues in Durham alongside students and teachers at Carter Community School, a charter school just one mile from Duke’s East Campus.

 

By helping seventh and eighth grade students complete writing assignments about local issues, engaging in structured reflection, and conducting independent research, Duke students learn to think critically, both about writing and about what it means to be a member of the Durham community.

 

During the Fall 2008 course, Carter students visited Duke for a campus tour, admissions presentation, and a teleconference with a published author. This fall Carter students will come to Duke for a library research session and a culminating poster presentation where they will share their work.
